Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore underwent microdiscectomy surgery on Thursday and is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks.
The procedure, in which a small portion of the spine is removed to allow a nerve to heal, was performed in Miami by Dr. Barth Green.
The three-time All Star is a career .269 hitter, but has been limited to 104 games over the past two seasons while battling several injuries.
