Ryan Howard's time away from the Phillies lineup was given an unfortunate boost on Monday.
The 33-year-old slugger has a torn meniscus in his left knee that will require surgery. Expected recovery time is 6-to-8 weeks.
Philly had placed Howard on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with what was initially termed left knee inflammation.

Darin Ruf, recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, will now get an extended look at the major league level.
Over 82 games in the minors this season, Ruf hit .266 with seven homers and 46 RBI.
