Gardner's 18 points, late heroics, lift American to 64-60 win over Hampton

Pee Wee Gardner scored 18 points, including a three-point play with 20 seconds left, as American edged Hampton 64-60 on Wednesday.
Dwight Meikle scored consecutive baskets for the Pirates (1-5) to produce a 60-59 lead with 1:34 to play. Then Gardner and Meikle swapped turnovers before Gardner's game-winning play. Deron Powers missed a shot with 1 second left, allowing Kevin Panzer to add two free throws.
Jesse Reed led the Eagles (4-2) with 21 points, 17 in the first half when they led 37-34. John Schoof also had 18 points, hitting 6 of 11 3-pointers. Reed had seven rebounds and Gardner six assists.

Powers and Meikle both had 14 points for Hampton.
Both teams shot at least 50 percent, making 24 field goals. The difference was American dropped 11 3's to Hampton's 5.
