Gambia lobbies African football officials in Brazil to overturn 2-year ban

The Gambia Football Federation says it met with Confederation of African Football President Issa Hayatou and other officials on the sidelines of last month's FIFA Congress in an attempt to get the country's two-year ban overturned.

The GFF says it told Hayatou it did not forge passports or intentionally field overage players in a game.

Gambia was banned after it was discovered it had five over-age players in an African under-20 championship qualifier against Liberia in April. CAF said documents were doctored. The ban means Gambia's national teams and clubs can't play in African competitions.

In a statement, the GFF says it presented its side of the story to Hayatou in Brazil last month ahead of the World Cup. Gambia had already filed a formal appeal in May.
