Ferrer, Haas reach Miami semis
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Third seed David Ferrer needed three sets to win his quarterfinal match, while 15th-seeded Tommy Haas had an easier time Wednesday at the Sony Open, an ATP Masters 1000 event.
Ferrer fought back to beat Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in 1 hour, 55 minutes at Crandon Park. The break-filled match saw Ferrer spoil Melzer's serve on seven occasions.
Ferrer, who led the ATP in titles and match wins last year, will meet Haas in the semifinals.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The 34-year-old one-time world No. 2 Haas stunned two-time defending Miami champion Novak Djokovic here on Tuesday, and then turned in a mild upset over 11th-seeded Gilles Simon, needing just 64 minutes to record a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
Haas blew two serves past his opponent, forcing Simon into a pair of double faults while committing none of those crucial errors.
Two other quarterfinals will be staged Thursday when second seed Andy Murray battles ninth-seeded Marin Cilic and fourth seed Tomas Berdych tangles with eighth-seeded Richard Gasquet. The U.S. Open champion Murray titled here in 2009 and was last year's Miami runner-up to Djokovic. Berdych was the Sony Open runner-up in 2010.
