Fernando Verdasco, Philipp Kohlschreiber earn 1st-round wins at Shanghai Masters

Fernando Verdasco of Spain and Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany reached the second round of the Shanghai Masters with straight-sets victories Sunday.
Verdasco beat Go Soeda of Japan 6-2, 6-4 after converting four of his six break points and hitting six aces, setting up a match against seventh-seeded Juan Monaco.
Kohlschreiber, seeded 16th, used a dominant serve to win 6-4, 6-4 against Ryan Harrison of the United States with one break in each set. He will play either Feliciano Lopez or Alejandro Falla in the second round.
