Jordan Spieth wasted no time seizing on his rare opportunity to chase a Grand Slam. He had six birdies in his opening 11 holes and kept his name on the leaderboard Thursday in the British Open.

So did a familiar foe — Dustin Johnson.

Johnson and Spieth picked up where they left off a month ago at Chambers Bay, where Spieth beat him by one shot in the U.S. Open. For this opening round, Johnson looked like the player to beat. He overpowered St. Andrews in scoring conditions by hitting 10 wedges into the greens in his round of 7-under 65.

Former champion Paul Lawrie, Retief Goosen and Jason Day were among those at 66.

Spieth finished with a 20-foot birdie on the 18th hole for a 67.
