Dodgers designate pitcher Mat Latos for assignment

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Dodgers have designated pitcher Mat Latos for assignment after he was winless in five starts since being acquired from Miami 1 1/2 months ago.

The right-hander went 0-3 with a 6.66 ERA in six games for the NL West-leading Dodgers, who obtained him on July 30 in a five-player trade.

The team also reinstated right-hander Carlos Frias from the 60-day DL on Thursday.

Frias last pitched in a big league game on June 30 before being placed on the DL with right lower back tightness. He is 5-5 with a 4.39 ERA in 14 games, including 12 starts, with the Dodgers this season.

The 25-year-old pitcher had a 4.73 ERA in seven injury rehabilitation games with Class A Rancho Cucamonga and Triple-A Oklahoma City. Frias last pitched on Sept. 6 with Oklahoma City against Memphis, when he threw two scoreless innings of relief.
