Date-Krumm advances in Chinese Taipei

Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm was among Monday's first-round winners at the inaugural Taipei WTA Ladies Open.

The 42-year-old Date-Krumm held off American qualifier Alexandra Stevenson 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Meanwhile, Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn tripped up eighth-seeded Hungarian Greta Arn 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Additional wins came for qualifier Ling Zhang of Hong Kong and Japan's Kurumi Nara.

This week's top seed is Chinese Peng Shuai.

This tournament is the first of the WTA's new Challenger Series. It sits between the WTA's International Series and the ITF Women's Circuit events.

The champion will earn $20,000.
