The Chicago Cubs placed right fielder Jorge Soler and relief pitcher Jason Motte on the disabled list.

Soler has been grounded by a strained oblique, while the bearded right-handed sustained a strained right shoulder.

The injuries ding the Cubs' depth in the outfield and in the bullpen, but winning four in a row over the weekend provided a six-game cushion over the San Francisco Giants for the second wild-card spot.

Chris Denorfia and Chris Coghlan will likely serve as a platoon in right during Solery's absence.

Motte has not been the dominant reliever he was with the Cardinals, and since a solid start to the season he's had a rough second half. Still, he's a valuable arm to missing in the bullpen, especially with Rafael Soriano and Neil Ramirez also out.
