A resurgent Kasey Kahne led the first of two rounds of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice at Martinsville Speedway in advance of Sunday's STP 500 (FS1, 1 p.m. ET).

Kahne, who qualified second for Sunday's race, had a best lap of 96.073 miles per hour in his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, which was tops in the 55-minute session.

The STP 500 will be a big test for Kahne's squad.

"I know the team will be ready," said Kahne. "My pit crew is as good as anything here. I'm looking forward to giving them a good stall and having great stops on Sunday which is a big part of this race."

Ryan Newman of Richard Childress Racing was second fast, as he ran 95.849 mph in the No. 31 RCR Chevy.

Third was Furniture Row Racing's Martin Truex Jr., the only Toyota in the top seven.

Brian Vickers, who had very minor wall contact in the opening minutes of the session, was fourth ahead of Paul Menard and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

The final Happy Hour round of practice takes place at 1 p.m. ET, with live coverage on FS1.
