Broncos announce front office suspensions
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Denver Broncos have suspended a pair of front office executives for their recent arrests for drunk driving.
Director of pro personnel Tom Heckert was suspended for a month without pay for his June 11 arrest, while director of player personnel Matt Russell was given an indefinite suspension without pay for his July 6 incident.
Both suspensions are effective as of July 15.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Broncos said the commissioner's office was notified of the penalties and added that the NFL has no plans to impose additional discipline.
"It's particularly disappointing that two members of my staff acted so irresponsibly," said Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway in a statement Monday. "Simply put, it's unacceptable and inexcusable.
"While Matt and Tom have apologized and taken accountability, it's most important they take advantage of whatever help they need. We will learn from this and take the necessary action as we move forward in a positive way."
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Heckert was pulled over and detained on June 11 in Parker, a suburb just over 20 miles from downtown Denver. He was charged with driving under the influence and careless driving.
The incident wasn't revealed until a day after Russell's arrest in July.
Russell was arrested after hitting two cars in Summit County, Colorado. He faces charges of driving under the influence, having an open container of alcohol in his car, careless driving resulting in injury and failure to display proof of insurance.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Broncos said both men will be monitored closely to ensure compliance with treatment and rehab programs, and will be thoroughly evaluated before any potential return to employment.
