Bengals lose G Wharton for season

Cincinnati Bengals guard Travelle Wharton is expected to undergo surgery for a torn right ACL and will be sidelined for the entire 2012 season.

Wharton was hurt early in Friday's preseason opener against New York Jets when someone rolled up on his right leg.

"Hopefully it isn't bad when you go in there, but it is still an injury that requires surgery and you have to take care of," said Wharton on Tuesday.

The Bengals signed Wharton in March, just days after the 31-year-old veteran was released by the Carolina Panthers.

"It's devastating," he added about the injury. "People have welcomed me since this spring with open arms, being a part of this family, this organization. Going down before you even get started, that's disappointing to anyone. Now it's time for me to get prepared for surgery and rehab."

Wharton started all 99 games he played over the past eight seasons with the Panthers, who selected the South Carolina product in the third round of the 2004 draft. He missed the final 15 games of the 2006 season after suffering torn ligaments in his left knee during the opener.
