A's transfer O'Flaherty to 60-day DL

Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics placed reliever Eric O'Flaherty on the 60-day disabled list Monday as the free-agent acquisition continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

O'Flaherty, who signed a two-year contract worth a reported $7 million with Oakland last month, underwent an elbow reconstruction in May of last year and will be sidelined to begin the upcoming regular season.

The former Atlanta left-hander went 3-0 with a 2.50 earned run average in 19 appearances with the Braves in 2013 prior to being shelved.

The move was made to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for pitcher Joe Savery, whom Oakland claimed off waivers from Philadelphia.

A former first-round pick of the Phillies, Savery owns a 3-2 record with a 4.15 ERA over 41 major league games. The southpaw posted a 2-0 mark with a 3.15 ERA in 18 outings with Philadelphia last season, as well as a 3-1 record with a 3.51 ERA in 22 appearances at three different minor league levels.
