General Motors Co. is recalling nearly 45,000 of its 2012 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact cars because of a defect that could prevent washer fluid from spraying on the car's windshield.

The recall covers certain 2012 Sonics manufactured from May 5, 2011 through Feb. 24, 2012.

GM says the windshield wiper hose on these cars may separate from the washer fluid reservoir. That could prevent washer fluid from reaching the windshield so the wipers can clear the driver's view of the road.

GM says it will notify owners. Dealers will secure the windshield washer hose to prevent it from separating from the fluid reservoir, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin around Sept. 7, affecting 44,668 cars.

The Sonic is the nation's top-selling subcompact car.
