(SportsNetwork.com) - The Memphis Grizzlies have yet to win back-to-back games this season, so they'll give it a go Wednesday in the continuation of a three- game homestand versus the New Orleans Pelicans.
Memphis opened the homestand by disposing of the lowly Boston Celtics 95-88 on Monday. The Grizzlies erased a six-point deficit and closed the game on a 21-8 run, outscoring the Celtics by a 29-16 count in the fourth quarter.
Jerryd Bayless scored 15 points in the final stanza, while Mike Conley and Zach Randolph registered 15 points apiece as well.
"I kept looking at my staff saying, 'I've got to get Mike Conley in there,' but Jerryd kept making buckets. I would have been a fool if I would have taken Jerryd out of that game," said Grizzlies coach Mike Joerger. "He has kind of been due. He has missed some shots. He's a guy that's similar to Mike Miller in that every time he shoots, I think it's going in."
Marc Gasol chipped in 14 points for the Grizzlies, which is 2-2 on the young season and 2-0 at home. Last season the Grizz went 32-9 at FedExForum, setting a new franchise record for home victories.
The Grizzlies will also welcome Golden State to town on this homestand.
New Orleans has yet to win a road game this season (0-1) and will play four of its next five games away from the Crescent City, where the Pelicans dropped a 104-98 decision to the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.
Eric Gordon led the hosts with 20 points, while Anthony Davis tallied 17 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Brian Roberts scored 17 points off the bench for New Orleans, which lost despite making 10-of-18 3-pointers.
"We had a good first quarter and then after that we went away a bit from the things that are necessary for us to be good," Pelicans head coach Monty Williams said.
Phoenix had a 37-24 advantage in the third quarter and the hosts failed to chip away in the final stanza.
"That's the game-breaker right there. That's what pushed the momentum in their favor," Roberts said of the third quarter. "It was tough in the fourth quarter to try to fight back and make plays. When we fell in the third quarter, it's tough to get back. There are things that we can do differently defensively, but there is no real excuse to give up thirty-seven points. We came out and gave the first punch, and they punched back but we didn't respond."
The Pelicans will host the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday before hitting the road again for three straight against the Suns, Lakers and Utah Jazz.
New Orleans and Memphis split four matchups a season ago, while the Grizzlies have won nine of the past 14 games between the Southwest foes. New Orleans, formerly known as the Hornets, have dropped four of five trips to Memphis.
