Texas Tech's Baker Mayfield is believed to be the first walk-on true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for a BCS school.

Mayfield started for the Red Raiders at SMU on Friday night in coach Kliff Kingsbury's first game as head coach.

With presumed starter Michael Brewer dealing with a back issue, the Red Raiders knew they would be starting a freshman in an opener for the first time in school history. Mayfield, a walk-on, started ahead of Davis Webb.

On Tech's opening drive, Mayfield was 7-of-9 passing for 46 yards. After a pass dropped near the 10 and a sack, the Red Raiders settled for an opening field goal.
