Benoit Cheyrou's goal in first-half stoppage time lifted Marseille to a 1-0 win over Brest on Saturday at the Velodrome.

The victory pushes Marseille back into second place in Ligue 1, two points clear of Lyon, which temporarily held the league's second spot after earning a 2-1 win over Montpellier on Friday.

Marseille was on the front foot throughout the first half and was defensively sharp, not allowing Brest a single shot on target over the duration of the opening 45 minutes.

The breakthrough came in the first minute of first-half stoppage time after Cheyrou whipped a well-placed free kick on goal from the left side of the penalty area that beat Brest goalkeeper Alexis Thebaux to the lower left corner for the only goal of the match.

Brest sent numbers forward throughout the second half in search of the tying goal, but the Marseille back four held strong to come away with three crucial points.
