STANFORD, Calif. – The last thing the Oregon Ducks needed Sunday against No. 4 Stanford and Chiney Ogwumike was a slow start.
But that's exactly what they got.
The Ducks fell behind 7-0, trailed 23-6 with more than 11 minutes left in the first half and never recovered, falling 74-50 to the Cardinal.
Stanford (26-2, 15-1 Pac 12) beat Oregon (4-24, 2-14) for the 17th consecutive time, improving to 47-8 in the series and 26-1 at Maples Pavilion, where the Ducks haven't won since March 5, 1987 in their first game at that arena.
"There's a history here," Ducks coach Paul Westhead said. "I only know the history of us against Stanford. I don't know how Stanford deals with others. But they get off to the best starts. So if that's their pattern, we sure let them set that pattern.
"It's just a hard thing to then dig back in and play even. I think the start was unfortunate. But, to their credit, they were making shots early, outside perimeter shots."
For most of the night, Oregon had no answer for Ogwumike, who scored 27 points, grabbed a school record 24 rebounds and set a Stanford career mark with her 52nd double-double.
Freshman Jillian Alleyne had a double-double for the Ducks with 12 and 10 rebounds. Devyn Galland scored 10 points, while Liz Brenner had 8.
In the first half, when Stanford built its big lead, Alleyne went scoreless, while grabbing four rebounds.
"In the first half, Chiney had really good defense, and my shots were getting deflected a lot," Alleyne said. "I just knew I had to come out and try to do something different because I'd been in that position before. So I just came out, I did my quick moves and did what I had to do to help my team the best way I can. It was probably more a mental thing."
Ogwumike, a junior, broke the career double-double record she had briefly shared with her older sister, Nnemkadi Ogwumike. Chiney, the Pac-12s leading scorer and rebounder, broke her sister's single-game rebounding record of 23, set last season against Oregon. The younger Ogwumike's previous career high for rebounds was 19, set at Tennessee on Dec. 12, 2012.
Ogwumike had a double-double in the first half with 14 rebounds and 11 points as the Cardinal built a commanding 40-22 lead. She made double-double history with 1:55 left in the half, taking a pass on the low block and scoring. That gave her 11 points to go with 11 rebounds.
The Cardinal (26-2, 15-1 Pac-12) won their 12th straight game since suffering a 67-55 loss to Cal on Jan. 13 and remained tied atop the conference standings with the Bears. Stanford beat Oregon (4-24, 2-14) for the 17th consecutive time, improving to 47-8 in the series and 26-1 at Maples Pavilion.
"I don't think we played particularly well," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "I thought we were kind of flat, honestly. But Chiney had a great game. She just really put this team on her back. I thought Amber (Orrange) stepped up. Otherwise, we weren't shooting well. What we did well, we got to the (offensive) boards. People were playing hard defensively. We tried to get in passing lanes and be aggressive. We're ready to finish up the regular season. We're ready to go to Washington and Washington State and get ready for the Pac-12 tournament."
Orrange had 12 points for Stanford, while Sara James and Bonnie Samuelson scored 8 apiece.
