Prior to beginning a three-game series against the New York Mets, the Phillies announced the signing of veteran infielder Mike Fontenot to a minor league deal.

The 31-year-old Louisiana native hit .227 with four homers, 15 doubles and 21 RBI in 85 games with the Giants last season, but was released on April 3.

He was part of San Francisco's 2010 World Series winners, acquired from the Cubs on August 11 of that year and collecting five RBI and a .282 average in 28 regular-season games. He added three hits in 14 at-bats in the playoffs.

Over a six-year pro career, the former Orioles draft pick in 2001 is a .263 hitter who has racked up 26 home runs, 84 doubles and 158 RBI in 535 appearances.
