Green Bay coughs up 70-42 loss to No. 14 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin-Green Bay couldn't take care of the ball, and Wisconsin took advantage.

The Phoenix (4-5) coughed it up 16 times in a 70-42 loss on Wednesday night, keeping them from ever mounting a serious challenge to the Badgers, who improved to 17-1 against Green Bay.

Green Bay's miscues led to 21 points, while the Badgers avoided a second straight loss at home to an in-state foe by turning the ball over just six times.

"Each half, we started off with turnovers and it killed us," Green Bay coach Brian Wardle said. "Wisconsin penalized us for that - 21 points off turnovers; we had zero off that. You're going to lose to a really good team in their arena by 25-30 if you do that."

Wisconsin point guard Jordan Taylor had 15 points and 10 assists and didn't turn the ball over once for Wisconsin (7-2), four days after he had a career-high five turnovers in a loss to Marquette that snapped the Badgers' 23-game home winning streak.

Ryan Evans scored 14 points and Jared Berggren added 13 for Wisconsin, which took control with a 14-1 run in the first half. Evans and Berggren had back-to-back slam dunks as Wisconsin scored the first eight points of the second half to build a 20-point lead and never looked back.

"We played a good team on a mission tonight," Wardle said. "We were going to see their A game tonight."

Wisconsin won despite shooting 3 of 17 (17.6 percent) from 3-point range. The Badgers opened the season with six straight wins while going 47.2 percent from beyond the arc, but have cooled off since.

Ben Brust and Rob Wilson hit 3-pointers in the first three minutes to give Wisconsin a 6-0 lead, but the Badgers missed their next 13 from long range before Taylor made one with 2:58 left in the game.

"We did a good job of touching Jared and Ryan down low and they made some nice moves down there and got to the foul line," Taylor said. "It's nice to know you can still score when the 3's not going down. It shows a different element we have to our team."

Berggren and Evans combined to go 11 of 16 from the field as the Badgers scored a season-best 36 points in the paint.

The Badgers, who entered the game leading the nation in scoring defense at 44.5 points per game, held Green Bay to their season low in points. The Phoenix also scored 42 points in a loss to Virginia on Nov. 25.

Center Alec Brown led Green Bay with 10 points, missing eight of his 12 field goal attempts. The 7-1 sophomore had only four rebounds after posting 18 points and eight boards at Wisconsin a year ago.

"He's a good player. If he catches it inside, it's not good for us," Berggren said. "So we just tried to focus on keeping the ball out of his hands. . We had good help on him all night. I thought we did a pretty good job."
