Two-time major champion Lleyton Hewitt has pulled out of the French Open, only hours before he was to play in the first round.

The tournament announced the Australian's withdrawal Sunday morning. He was scheduled to play Albert Montanes of Spain on Day 1 at Roland Garros.

The 30-year-old Hewitt won the U.S. Open in 2001, and Wimbledon in 2002, and spent a total of 80 weeks at No. 1 in the ATP rankings.

He hasn't played on tour since March because of foot surgery.
