Ferrari's 800th Formula One race ended with a disappointing performance at the Turkish Grand Prix and left the Italian team vowing to address performance issues to salvage a sub-par season.
Felipe Massa finished seventh and Fernando Alonso eighth at the "Otodrom" on Sunday as the Italians failed to place in the top three for the second straight race.
"It wasn't the performance we expected to have. We need to address the issues because we have time to react," team principal Stefano Domenicali said. "We must make a step forward to close the performance gap. We need reaction and not depression."
Alongside Mercedes and Renault, Ferrari has been left chasing Red Bull and McLaren after a promising start which saw Alonso win the season-opening Bahrain GP.
"It was a case of damage limitation," two-time champion Alonso said of Formula One's most successful team's problems. "Despite everything we are still in a good position to fight for the title."
Lewis Hamilton led a McLaren 1-2 ahead of Jenson Button, while overall leader Mark Webber was third for Red Bull. Alonso is fourth in the drivers' standings with 79 points to Webber's 93, while Massa has 67.
Ferrari stopped work on last year's car early to focus on 2011. Domenicali said work put into the F-duct aerodynamic device had not fully paid off but that significant upgrades expected for the upcoming Canadian and European GPs could help squeeze more downforce out of the Italians' car.
Ferrari has taken advantage of mistakes by other drivers to stay in the fight but Domenicali knows that is not a viable strategy. Both Ferrari drivers moved up after Sebastian Vettel crashed his Red Bull fighting for the win.
"We can't rely on others' problems," he said.
