ISLAMABAD – An international rights body has urged Pakistan to end the "current crackdown" on human rights defenders, activists, journalists and members of civil society ahead of the July 25 elections.
Thursday's statement by Amnesty International comes a week after authorities abducted Pakistani rights activist Gul Bukhari and held her for several hours in the eastern city of Lahore. Bukhari is known for her criticism of Pakistan's military.
Bukhari was seized on her way to a TV studio where she was to appear as an on-air analyst.
Also last week, Lahore journalist Asad Kharal, was wounded in a mysterious attack and earlier this month, 37 activists from Pakistani tribes were detained for rallying against the military.
In recent years, scores of journalists and bloggers who criticized security forces have gone missing in Pakistan.
