The Islamic State terror group claimed responsibility Thursday for a car bomb attack that reportedly left several people dead outside Yemen’s presidential palace.
In a statement posted online, the terror group said the attack at the security checkpoint was carried out by a suicide bomber called Abu Hanifa al-Hollandi, suggesting that he was Dutch, according to Reuters.
The statement said the attack killed 10 members of the palace security and wounded about 20, but it was not immediately possible to verify the information.
"A suicide car bomb targeted a security checkpoint about 500 yards from the Maashiq palace, and there were casualties," an official told Reuters earlier.
Another official said several people were killed and wounded in the attack.
Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi is based in Aden, the country’s second largest city. His government has been battling to keep its authority after loyalists – backed by Arab forces – seized the city in July, according to Reuters.
The government has been fighting the Iran-allied Houthi militia and supporters of the country’s former leader, Ali Abdullah Saleh, in a war that has left around 6,000 people dead.
