He isn’t the first rapper and entertainer to dabble in the sports world. But Jay-Z, aka Shawn Carter, is one of the world’s most successful rappers – and he opened a sports agency that has taken the sports world by storm.
Earlier this week, it was announced that the music mogul had signed New York Yankees Dominican superstar Robinson Cano to his new Roc Nation Sports management company in partnership with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) – and away from Cano’s free agency-loving agent, Scott Boras.
Now ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that restricted free agent and New York Giant Victor Cruz, who recently signed to CAA, will move over and work with Roc Nation.
A source told the New York Daily News that the Giants wide receiver believe CAA’s Tom Condon will continue to represent Cruz in talks with the team regardless of any deal he signs with Jay-Z to handle his other business activities.
Several sources told the Daily News that Cruz is asking for $10 million to $11 million a year.
Two prominent players in their respective sports and Latino communities will now be the foundation for an agency led by a man who previously conquered the music world.
“Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” Jay-Z said in a press release.
Jay-Z is not the only rapper who became a sports agent. In 1999, “Master P” Percy Miller represented New Orleans Saints running back Ricky Williams, and the football player was given what some sports and legal experts believe was the worst contract for a player of his stature and prominence at the time.

Hova already has a minor ownership stake in the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets basketball franchise and is established in the New York sports scene.
Reporters are already speculating that Jay-Z wants to keep both athletes in New York with their respective teams.
