Seventh-ranked flyweight Wilson Reis needed just 1:49 to finish UFC newcomer Hector Sandoval at UFC 201 in what will go on the books as the fastest submission in UFC flyweight history.
Reis wasted no time dragging the fight to the ground, using a beautiful trip takedown to put Sandoval on his back. Sandoval tried to scramble back to his feet but Reis was able to take Sandoval's back and use his exceptional BJJ to put an end to the fight instead.
Referee Dan Miragliotta called an end to the bout at the 1:49 mark of the first round.
Reis was originally supposed to battle Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title on Saturday, but Johnson was hurt in the lead-up to the bout. The 31-year-old Brazilian might have lost the opportunity for some time, considering his next challenger will come from the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter."
"I had enough motivation entering this fight after the fight with Demetrious was called off, but that would have been a life-changing fight for me," Reis said after the fight. "Next, if Henry Cejudo or Joseph Benavidez gets hurt, I'd like to step in for one of them. Ian McCall on a quick turnaround would also be a possibility. But I'd have to talk to my coaches first."
Reis improves to 21-6 with the win while Sandoval falls to 12-3.
