Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - No. 3 seed Simona Halep fought past Bethanie Mattek-Sands to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday.

After taking the first set, Halep led 4-1 in the second before Mattek-Sands took four of the next six games. The Romanian ended up taking the next game to finish off Mattek-Sands 6-4, 7-5 and advance.

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, the runner-up at Wimbledon and No. 7 seed in Melbourne, had a tough first set but ended up cruising in the second to move past Caroline Garcia 7-5, 6-0.

10th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova defeated Karolina Pliskova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Belgian Yanina Wickmayer pulled off an upset of 14th-seeded Sara Errani 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In other action, 21st-seeded Peng Shuai battled her way past Yaroslava Shvedova 7-6 (9-7), 6-3; German Julia Goerges defeated Czech Lucie Hradecka 7-6 (8-6), 7-5; and Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania downed Carina Witthoeft 6-4, 6-4.
