Padres place C Grandal on 60-day DL

San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a right knee sprain.

Grandal, who was suspended 50 games in November for testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone, was reinstated from the restricted list on May 28.

He was hitting .216 with one home run and nine RBI in 28 games before suffering ACL and MCL damage during Saturday's game against the Nationals. Washington's Anthony Rendon slid into Grandal while trying to break up a double play in the third inning.

To take Grandal's place on the roster, the Padres have selected the contract of catcher Rene Rivera from Triple-A Tucson. He will be active for Sunday's game against the Nationals.

Rivera, 29, is making his first career stint with the Padres. In 74 games with Tucson, he has five home runs and 38 RBI, and his .343 batting average ranks fourth overall in the Pacific Coast League.

He owns a .193 batting average with four home runs and 15 RBI in 98 career Major League games with Seattle (2004-06) and Minnesota (2011).
