Lefty Wandy Rodriguez makes his 25th career start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night when the Pittsburgh Pirates host them in game three of a four-game series at PNC Park.
A former standout with the Houston Astros, Rodriguez is 8-10 in 25 appearances against Milwaukee - including 24 starts - and has posted a 4.14 earned run average against them in 143 1/3 innings.
He last faced Milwaukee on April 29 at Miller Park and dropped a 10-4 verdict after allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings.
He's split a pair of starts since that loss, losing to Washington and beating the New York Mets while allowing a combined four runs on 12 hits in 12 innings.
The Pirates are 5-2 in games he's started.
For the Brewers, righty Yovani Gallardo can continue a career's worth of success against Pittsburgh.
The 27-year-old Mexican has won 10 of 12 decisions in 16 career meetings with the Pirates, holding them to a combined .211 batting average while allowing 30 runs on 75 hits in 94 innings.
He was the winner in the April 29 meeting with Rodriguez, a game in which he pitched seven full innings and allowed a single earned run on three hits.
He's 0-1 in two starts since, while giving up 11 hits and seven runs in 10 innings.
On Tuesday, Andrew McCutchen's solo homer in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted the Pirates to a 4-3 win.
The Pirates spoiled two late opportunities and were a whopping 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position for the game. but were still able to prevail thanks to McCutchen.
He led off the final frame, and his blast off Mike Fiers (0-2) just cleared the center field wall, giving Pittsburgh its fourth win in five games.
"I didn't know if it was going to go out or not when I hit it, so I just started running. Once I saw it was a home run, I just kept running," McCutchen said.
Vin Mazzaro (2-0) picked up the win by spinning the final two of six scoreless frames for the Pittsburgh bullpen. Starter Jeff Locke struck out six over six innings of work, yielding three runs on seven hits -- the most he's allowed in six starts.
Russell Martin had two doubles and an RBI, while Clint Barmes and Garrett Jones drove in a run apiece in the victory.
Milwaukee fell to 1-4 on its 10-game road trip. Jean Segura hit a solo homer and knocked in two runs while Carlos Gomez contributed a pair of hits and an RBI in the setback.
Kyle Lohse worked around five walks to toss 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball for Milwaukee. He left in line for the win, but Milwaukee's fourth reliever of the game, John Axford, blew the save chance.
"It's tough to lose when you have a lead late and can't hold onto it," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.
The Brewers won two of three at home against the Pirates earlier this season and are 13-5 in the past 18 meetings between the Central foes.
