Nick Elko threw a 42-yard scoring pass and Terrick Colston returned an interception 53 yards for a touchdown as Delaware State jumped on South Carolina State for a 31-17 victory Saturday in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action.

The Hornets (3-3, 2-1) scored on the first of Elko's two touchdown passes, that 42-yarder to Dae-Hon Cheung for a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Terrick Colston intercepted South Carolina State's Derrick Wiley and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Elko, 23 of 33 for 293 yards, was sacked by the Bulldogs' Cortney Ingram for a loss of 18 yards and a fumble. Justin Hughes recovered it in the end zone to make it 14-7.

But Elko's 12-yard scoring pass to Justin Wilson and Nagee Jackson's 5-yard run made it 31-10. Richard Cue's 10-yard touchdown pass to Temarrick Hemingway with 1:44 left came too late. The Bulldogs are 2-5, 1-3.
