Rockies lose 6-5 to Marlins

DENVER – Five Colorado Rockies combined to throw 140 pitches. Three misplaced breaking balls were all that were needed to do in the Rockies.

"The game boiled to three swings," Colorado manager Jim Tracy said. "Swings on breaking balls left up in the zone accounted for five of the six runs they scored."

Jose Reyes and Giancarlo Stanton homered, Wade LeBlanc won for the first time as a starter and the Miami Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 on Friday night.

The two-out, three-run homer by Reyes was a curveball," Tracy said. "Josh Roenicke hung a slider to Stanton that sat right in the middle of the plate that Mr. Stanton hit the ball about as far as you could hit it."

Two batters later Roenicke hung the same slider to where John Buck could hit it to right center field.

Buck and Gorkys Hernandez had two hits each for the Marlins, who won for just the third time in their last 10 games.

Steve Cishek pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his eighth save.

The Rockies only had one extra-base hit.

"When you have 11 singles and you have one extra base hit of the 12 on the night, you know there was some opportunity there to push a couple more runs," Tracy said. "We left them out there and we couldn't get the extra hit that would have changed the complexion of the game."

Wilin Rosario had two hits and two RBIs for the Rockies, who had their four-game winning streak stopped.

"That's part of the game," Rosario said of the excessive singles. "It was the difference between winning and losing.

Stanton tied it with a leadoff homer off Roenicke (4-1) in the sixth, his 23rd of the season. Donovan Solano followed with a triple and scored on Buck's double to give the Marlins a 6-5 lead.

The Rockies had had the tying run on second in the seventh but Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez struck out to strand Eric Young Jr.

Tyler Colvin lined out softly to end the eighth with runners at the corners.

Reyes gave the Marlins a 4-2 lead with a three-run homer off starter Jeff Francis in the top of the fifth. It was his ninth home run of the season.

"It was frustrating because it was in my glove at the end," Gonzalez said. "I was able to run hard to the wall. I barely missed it."

The Rockies came right back in their half of the inning to retake the lead on three singles and a groundout.

Josh Rutledge drove in the first run with a single to short, Gonzalez's groundout tied it and Rosario's two-out single to center gave Colorado a 5-4 lead.

LeBlanc (2-2) was lifted for a pinch hitter after the fifth. He allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out a pair to get his first win since moving into the rotation on Aug. 1.

The Marlins jumped ahead 1-0 on Carlos Lee's RBI double in the first. Rosario and Jordan Pacheco had run-scoring singles in the fourth to give Colorado a 2-1 lead.
