The San Diego Padres agreed to terms with outfielder Cameron Maybin on a contract through the 2016 season with a club option for 2017 on Saturday.

Maybin, who was acquired in a November 2010 trade from the Florida Marlins for relievers Edward Mujica and Ryan Webb, enjoyed a breakout year in his first season with San Diego. The 24-year-old hit .264 with nine home runs, 40 runs batted in, 82 runs scored and 40 stolen bases last year.

"Cameron has certainly emerged as a core player," San Diego general manager Josh Byrnes said. "During his time with the Padres, he has impressed us with his play and with his character. He has shown us that he is committed to the Padres, and we are happy to secure his rights through 2017."

Over parts of five big league seasons with the Tigers, Marlins and Padres, Maybin has hit .255 with 22 home runs, 85 RBI and 175 runs scored in 305 games.
