Most Game 7s in 16 years

Montreal's 2-1 victory against Boston in Game 6 on Tuesday night will produce a fourth Game 7 in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It's the most Game 7s in the opening round since 1995, when there were also four. The record is six, set in 1992. There will be 49 first-round games this year, matching the record set in 1995 and equaled last year.

The Bruins and Canadiens will also become the ninth teams to play Games 6 and 7 on consecutive nights since the best-of-seven format was adopted in 1939. The last time came in 2008, when Washington won Game 6 at Philadelphia on April 21, only to lose at home the next night. Before that, It hadn't happened since 2003, when Toronto-Philadelphia and Minnesota-Colorado in the first round and Minnesota-Vancouver in the second round all were decided in seven games, with the last two on consecutive days. Philadelphia eliminated Toronto in its series, while Minnesota won at Colorado and Vancouver.

Before that, it hadn't happened since the 1950 Final, when Detroit hosted the New York Rangers in Games 6 and 7 on April 22-23 at the Olympia, winning both games to take the Stanley Cup.

Minnesota is also the only team in the expansion era to win Games 6 and 7 on consecutive nights – the Wild did it twice in 2003.

The teams having home ice in Game 7 are 4-4. Teams that won Game 6 are also 4-4.
