NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Montreal Canadiens have traded defenseman Ryan O'Byrne to the Colorado Avalanche for the rights to unsigned draft choice Michael Bournival, the NHL official website (www.nhl.com) said Thursday.

The 6-foot-5 O'Byrne, who has appeared in only three games for Montreal this season, has two goals, 16 points and 181 penalty minutes in 128 games spanning four seasons after being selected in the third round of the 2003 draft.

Bournival, selected in the third round by the Avalanche last June, played 58 games for the Shawinigan Cataractes last season, scoring 24 goals and 62 points. The center leads the team with 10 goals and 24 points through 17 games this season.
