Beijing police have detained a Malaysian man they say robbed a luxury shop in downtown Beijing with a black toy gun.

Police said Tuesday that Moi Kit Leng, 38, has been detained on the charge of robbery after he grabbed several watches from a shopping center. The Beijing News identifies the retailer as Cartier store in Beijing's bustling Wangfujing business district.

Police say the suspect was captured within 22 minutes on Monday evening and he told police he wanted to rob the store because he lacked money.

Beijing News says the man tried to escape by carjacking a taxi. It quotes the Cartier store manager as saying the mask-wearing man snatched 11 watches worth more than 3 million yuan ($500,000).
