ISLAMABAD – A defense lawyer says a Pakistani anti-narcotics court has sentenced a British woman to life in prison on charges of attempting to smuggle heroin into Britain.
Attorney Shahzad Akbar says Khadija Shah, 26, was convicted on Tuesday.
Akbar said Shah's baby girl Malaika, who was born in prison, will remain with her behind bars.
He said Khadija Shah was set up by a man to carry suitcases holding 63 kilograms (139 pounds) of heroin when she was arrested at Islamabad airport in 2012, when she was six months pregnant.
The attorney said Shah did not know what was inside. Akbar said he will appeal the sentence.
Due to its proximity to Afghanistan, where much of the world's opium is grown, Pakistan is a drug transit route.
