Canada, let’s hope you weren’t too attached to your Sony retail stores. The Japanese giant recently announced it will close all of its 14 Canadian stores, reports CBC News.
In a statement sent to several news outlets, Sony stated that it plans to close its Canadian stores within 6 to 8 weeks from now. The list of stores closing includes the following locations:
- Three stores in Alberta
- Three stores in the Greater Vancouver area
- Five stores in the Greater Toronto area
- One store in Ottawa
- One store in Montreal
- One store in Quebec City
Sony will be in contact with previous Sony store customers in order to inform them about their warranties and future customer support. In the meantime, the focus is on the roughly 90 employees whose jobs will be affected by the closures. Sony has yet to comment on how, or if, it will help these employees with their transitions.

Sony has been in a bit of a rough patch as of late, and the closure of its Canadian stores is most likely the result of its pans to cut costs after announcing a $1.7 billion loss in late 2014. The company has been hurting in other areas, as well, including security after the recent hack of its movie division and a hack that caused downtime of the PlayStation Network right around Christmas. After all the hardship it bore last year, Sony had better hope 2015 will be better than 2014.
