It was a typical hustle play by rookie third baseman Kris Bryant that gave the Chicago Cubs quite a scare Sunday afternoon.
Trying to stretch an RBI single into a double in the fifth inning of Sunday's fifth consecutive victory, Bryant slid headfirst and Brewers shortstop Jean Segura appeared to tag him hard on the helmet. Bryant came up dizzy and was forced out of the game. Back in the clubhouse he had to undergo testing as part of the league's concussion protocol.
With the Cubs entering a huge seven-game stretch at Pittsburgh and then back home to face the Giants, Chicago needs its young slugger in the lineup to face the teams its battling for wild-card position.
"He's a little bit dizzy at the moment," Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters after the game. "He got banged a little bit on the slide, popped in the head.
"We took him out (as a precaution). I think he's going to be fine."
Bryant will be evaluated on Monday prior to the start of the series in Pittsburgh.
