Paris, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Second-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic headlined the list of second-round winners on Tuesday at the $3.65 million Paris Masters tennis event.
Djokovic took down French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert in just under 90 minutes. After a tense first set which saw the 22-year-old challenger take the Australian Open winner to a tiebreaker, Djokovic managed to reassert himself and claim a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory on the hardcourts.
There were three other second-round matches on the docket.
Jerzy Janowicz earned his way into a potential match with top seed Rafael Nadal by taking down Santiago Giraldo, with the 14th-seeded native of Poland earning a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory. Nadal will highlight Wednesday's second- round action with a matchup against Spaniard Marcel Granollers, who posted a first-round decision over Dmitry Tursunov.
Hometown hero Richard Gasquet had to work to get past Fernando Verdasco, needing 2 hours and 40 minutes to send his Spanish opponent packing with a 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 victory.
Gasquet moves on to face Japan's Kei Nishikori, another hard-working three-set winner Tuesday over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga by a 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7) in a match taking almost 2 1/2 hours to complete.
The first round was also completed Tuesday with six other matches. The winners were Spanish lucky loser Pablo Andujar, Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, Croat Ivan Dodig, Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, American Kevin Anderson and Polish qualifier Michal Przysiezny.
Andujar replaced Gael Monfils in the main draw after the Frenchman withdrew from the tournament because of a left wrist injury.
