Eovaldi takes hill for first time as a Marlin against Padres

Nathan Eovaldi takes the mound in his Miami Marlins debut tonight in the resumption of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres.

Eovaldi was dealt to Miami in the trade that sent infielder Hanley Ramirez to the Dodgers on Wednesday. Eovaldi, a 22-year-old right-hander who was drafted in the 11th round by the Dodgers in 2008, has made 10 starts this year and has received just 1.44 runs of support per start, the lowest in the big leagues. He's coming off a no-decision against the Mets on Sunday. In that game, Eovaldi allowed seven hits and a run over 4 1/3 innings and had a season-high seven strikeouts.

"I'm still new to everything, it's just getting used to it, the new stadium and stuff," Eovaldi said Friday. "I'm not too nervous at all. I am taking it as another start, and I'm going to keep going with the same game plan and keep doing what I'm doing."

Ross Ohlendorf, who was signed by the Padres on June 4, has yet to lose for the parent club in eight games (4 starts). The righty threw 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision against Colorado on Sunday when he allowed five hits and a pair of runs in 6 2/3 innings. He is 1-3 with a 5.73 ERA in four career starts against the Marlins.

Last night, just when it appeared that Carlos Zambrano had turned a corner, San Diego rallied for five runs in the sixth inning and went on to a 7-2 win. Yasmani Grandal delivered a go-ahead, bases-clearing triple and scored twice for the Padres, who have won nine of their past 13.

"Maybe he's scared to throw the ball over and they'll hit a grand slam," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We're trying to figure it out, whether it is mechanic. We talked to him early, and he said he was feeling fine. The first couple of innings, we were very excited to have him on the mound. Everything went south pretty quick."

Kip Wells (2-3), who allowed six runs -- five earned -- in his last start, rebounded well, tossing six strong innings and limiting Miami to two runs on five hits.

Zambrano (5-9) surrendered five runs -- four earned -- on three hits and four walks in five-plus innings. Over his last nine starts, Zambrano is 1-6 with a 7.66 earned run average.

Jose Reyes tripled to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and knocked in a run, as the Marlins lost for the eighth time in their last nine games.

Miami swept a three-game set from the Padres at Petco Park earlier in the year.
