REPEATING CHAMPIONS
The women's team defended its 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix title by defeating top-ranked Brazil, 26-24, 25-20, 25-21, on Aug. 28 in the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix gold-medal match in Macau, China. Destinee Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) earned the FIVB World Grand Prix most valuable player award after leading the team to victory.
ARCHERY
Emily Fischer (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Kendall Nicely (Gorham, Maine) each won an individual gold medal on Aug. 28 at the World Archery Youth Championships. En route to her second consecutive youth world championship title, Nicely also established a new world record. The victories capped off a winning week for the U.S. team, which also captured gold in the compound cadet mixed team event, gold in the women's and men's compound cadet team competition, silver in the compound junior mixed team event,, and bronze in the compound junior men's team competition.
BASEBALL
The U.S. started on a winning streak at the International Baseball Federation World 'AA'/16U Youth Championships in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico, earning victories against Mexico, Brazil and the Netherlands. Although the streak ended with an 8-6 loss to Japan on Aug. 27, the U.S. advanced to the gold- medal match, where the 16U National Team blanked Cuba, 9-0, to take first.
CYCLING
Following his fifth UCI Mountain Bike World Cup downhill victory in Val di Sole, Italy, last weekend, Aaron Gwin (Temecula, Calif.) sealed the overall downhill world cup title on Aug. 22. Melissa Buhl (Chandler, Ariz.) earned bronze in the four-cross competition to land her in second overall for the season.
Levi Leipheimer (Santa Rosa, Calif.) held his lead through the sixth and final stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge on Aug. 28 in Denver, winning the 518- mile race debut.
DIVING
Bianca Alvarez (Miami, Fla.) and Carrie Dragland (Woodinville, Wash.) won a bronze medal in synchronized 3-meter on Aug. 22 at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China helping the women's team capture a silver medal in the overall team competition.
ICE HOCKEY
Olympic silver medalist Molly Schaus (Natick, Mass.) made 17 saves and Team USA did all of the scoring in the second period to shut out Canada, 4-0, on Aug. 28 at the IIHF Women's Twelve Nations Invitational in Vierumaki, Finland. The U.S. has outscored its first four opponents of the tournament by a total of 40-1.
JUDO
Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass.) earned the bronze medal on Aug. 25 in the 78-kilogram division at the 2011 International Judo Federation World Championships in Paris. It was the second consecutive year of her earning a medal after she won the world title in 2010.
ROWING
Team USA advanced nine crews at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia.
TAEKWONDO
Aziza Chambers (Springfield, Ohio), who competed in the women's bantamweight (-53kg) division, captured the bronze medal at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China, on Aug. 23.
TRIATHLON
Mary Beth Ellis (Boulder, Colo.) and Jordan Rapp (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) each earned victories at the Ironman Canada on Aug. 28. Ellis' win marked her third Ironman victory of 2011 and set a new course record.
U.S. athletes made a mark at the Chicago Triathlon, where Sarah Haskins (St. Louis, Mo.) won the women's title in 2:05:05 and Matt Chrabot (Virginia Beach, Va) earned the men's title in 1:50:23 on Aug. 28.
VOLLEYBALL
Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, Calif.) earned the silver medal on Aug. 28 at the FIVB Swatch Beach Volleyball World Tour HP Beach Open in The Hague, Netherlands. The pair fell to Brazil, 21-17, 21-15, in the championship match.
WATER POLO
The women's team earned the silver medal on Aug. 22 at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China. Leah Robertson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Nadia Dan (La Canada, Calif.) each scored twice and Amber Oland (Santana, Calif.) teamed with Cassie Wyckoff (Los Altos, Calif.) for four saves in the losing effort. Meanwhile, the men's team fell to Macedonia, 10-7, in the bronze-medal match to earn fourth place.
WATER SKI
The U.S. Disabled Water Ski Team won the world team gold medal, and five U.S. team members won individual medals at the 10th Disabled Water Ski World Championships, which ran from Aug. 25-28 in West Chester, Ohio.
WRESTLING
Matthew Rundell (Schaumburg, Ill.) finished eighth in the 46 kilogram division on Aug. 28 for the best Greco-Roman finish by an American wrestler at the FILA Cadet World Championships in Szombathely, Hungary.
