TORONTO - Jaromir Jagr could be ending his storied NHL career in the city where it all started.
Penguins general manager Ray Shero told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Tuesday that the club has offered the free-agent right-winger a one-year contract, and expects to hear Wednesday whether Jagr will accept it.
"We feel from the information we have and after seeing at world championships, that he's a guy who might be able to help us this coming season," Shero said. "We feel he's a guy who could help us this year, and retire as a Penguin."
"Tomorrow is decision day," Shero added.
Jagr cannot sign with a team until Friday when free agency opens. The Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens are also reported to be interested in Jagr's services.
The 39-year-old native of Kladno, Czech Republic, is the ninth-highest scorer in NHL history with 646 goals and 953 assists for 1,599 points over 17 seasons.
He was drafted by the Penguins with the fifth pick in the 1990 NHL draft and helped the team win two Stanley Cups. He led the league in scoring five times and is a seven-time all-star.
He has spent the last three seasons with Omsk Avangard of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League.
