Kaberle: 'We know we are better in here'

BOSTON – Tomas Kaberle had an eventful night for the Boston Bruins.

Unfortunately, little of what the Bruins defenseman did turned out well in Saturday's 5-2 series-opening loss to Tampa Bay at TD Garden.

It was Kaberle's turnover behind the Boston net that led to Tampa Bay's third goal of the night, an unassisted tally by Teddy Purcell that proved to be the game-winner. It was also the final goal of a three-goal run in 85 seconds that put Boston into a hole from which it would not escape.

Kaberle was also a pivotal part of a power play that went 0-for-4 and is now 2-for-41 in the postseason. Twice, he tried to shot on power-play attempts only to shank both shots and miss the net by at least 15 feet.

Q: Three goals in the first period is not the ideal way to start a game, is it?

A: It's tough. We pretty much gave them every single one of them and we never gave up after. We know we are better in here and we have to show it in the second game. You know they are dangerous up front and you have to play in their zone and there is their goalie. We know it is not going to be an easy series. And we have to put it behind us right now and think about what is going to happen on Tuesday. 

Q: Did all the turnovers remind you of the Game 1 loss against Montreal?

A: Every team is different. Obviously, every team forechecks differently. We lost Game 1 as well and we have to make sure we are on top of them in Game 2 and dump the puck in and play hard, strong plays and put everything at the net and get some traffic. 

Q: Did the long layoff affect the team?

A: No. Both teams were in the same thing. We had a few good practices in between and it's all business after that. You can't complain about being … not playing a game for a week.

Q: What happened on the goal by Teddy Purcell where he took the puck from you?

A: He didn't take it from me, the puck slid on my blade and I tried to make a move. Those things you have to put behind you, the past behind you. I felt good in the first period, I thought I had good legs, when you make a mistake, you have to put it behind you. That's all you have to do. If you keep thinking about it, it's not going to make you any better. 

Q: What did you think of the power play tonight?

A: The first one wasn't good at all and then since then I thought we moved the puck well. And the third one and fourth I though way much better. We had a few good chances there. Once, the puck came behind him or something … we just have to focus on it. It could be the difference in Game2. 

Q: What happened on those shots on the power play? Are you squeezing your stick a bit?

A: My stick bent on it; it happens. It's not about squeezing the stick; it's just about hitting the net. When you look around and they are in between, so we try to look sometimes, shoot for a stick or something and it wasn't there today. So, just have a couple days in between the games and we focus on that.

Q: What did you think of Tyler Seguin in his first playoff game?

A: I thought he came out strong. Obviously, he is playing with confidence. He is a young kid and he was skating well. He gave us a chance with the first goal to get back in the game. I thought the second (period) was way better. We were all over them, just couldn’t get anything in behind [Dwayne] Roloson. If we had one goal in the second, it might have been a different game at the end of the night.
