COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Stefanie Murphy scored 17 points, Carolyn Swords and Jaclyn Thoman each had 13, and Boston College surprised No. 13 Maryland 78-69 on Thursday night.
The Eagles (14-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) opened the second half with an 18-2 run and held on to beat the cold-shooting Terrapins. Boston College has won two in a row against Maryland after losing the first 10 games between the teams.
Lynetta Kizer had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Alyssa Thomas added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Terps (13-3, 0-2). Maryland went 28 for 85 from the floor, including 1 for 20 from 3-point range, and sank only 12 of 28 free throws.
The Terrapins had only 11 turnovers compared to 22 for the Eagles and finished with a 53-45 rebounding advantage. But Maryland's poor shooting was the deciding factor.
After trailing for much of the opening 20 minutes, Boston College used its decisive second-half run to go up 45-37. Murphy scored six points and Kerri Shields chipped in with a pair of 3-pointers.
It was 55-47 before Maryland's Alicia DeVaughn hit a jumper and Kim Rodgers sank the Terrapins' only 3-pointer of the game. Thomas then hit a jumper, but a minute later she missed two free throws that would have given Maryland the lead.
Soon after that, Maryland forward Diandra Tchatchouang misfired on the front end of a 1-and-1. Swords then made two free throws on the opposite end to make it 59-54 with 5:18 left.
Despite going 0 for 8 from 3-point range and 7 for 16 at the foul line, the Terrapins led 35-27 at halftime.
Maryland began the game by missing 11 of its first 15 shots from the field, but the Eagles couldn't capitalize because they committed six turnovers in the first eight minutes.
It was 14-all before Terps freshman Laurin Mincy hit a layup and a jumper to ignite an 8-0 run. After B.C. closed to 26-23, Thomas contributed five points to a 9-2 spurt that gave Maryland a double-digit lead.
