Bridgeport Mayor: Malloy Wins City in Conn. Gov Race

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The mayor of Bridgeport says Democrat Dan Malloy won the election in Connecticut's largest city by more than 13,000 votes, apparently giving him the edge in the disputed governor's race.

Mayor Bill Finch says Malloy had 17,800 votes, compared with 4,075 for Republican Tom Foley.

Both candidates had claimed victory in Tuesday's election.

If the numbers hold, Malloy will become the first Democratic governor since 1991.

The announcement comes after local officials worked through the night to hand count the vote. There was a shortage of ballots on Election Day in Bridgeport, forcing some voters to wait in long lines and vote on photocopied ballots.

The totals still need to be certified by Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz (BY'-suh-wits).

A spokesman for Malloy had no immediate comment.
