Hundreds of people have jeered seven men accused of gang raping a teenager in northeastern Romania, but others have yelled their support, blaming the woman and media scrutiny for the case.

Lawyers at the court in Vaslui on Friday asked for the trial to be moved to another city due to intense media pressure, but the judge refused and is expected to rule on Monday.

The 18-year-old woman was repeatedly raped and sexually abused in November after she accepted a lift home. The suspects, aged 18 to 27, were later arrested pending trial.

The case became a national story after a court ruled in June that the suspects could remain free pending trial. Some 400,000 people have signed a petition calling for them to be held in custody.
