Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is warning that anyone "wanting to topple the regime would have to confront the state" amid calls for a new round of civil disobedience against price increases and fuel subsidy cuts.

The official SUNA news agency reported that al-Bashir, speaking at a public rally Monday in Kasala in eastern Sudan, described those campaigning for a strike as "agents."

His comments came as activists used social media to call for civil disobedience on Dec. 19.

Officials justify the subsidy cuts as a crucial step for economic reforms, while the opposition says it highlights the failures of al-Bashir's government.

Sudanese authorities arrested dozens of activists and members of opposition parties during a three-day campaign for a general strike last month.
