Iraqi authorities say multiple Islamic State suicide attacks targeting a police base have killed at least 30 troops in western Anbar province.

Police officials said three suicide bombers on Monday simultaneously drove their Humvees, seized from the Iraq army, into a police base in the Tharthar area. The attacks caused a large explosion in an ammunition depot inside the base.

Police said some Shiite militiamen were also stationed in the base. More than 40 troops were wounded in the attack.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief the media.

The attacks came as Iraqi security forces are battling IS militants in Anbar province in order to recapture areas lost to the militant group, including the provincial capital Ramadi.
