No tsunami warning after earthquake rattles Tokyo

Feb. 25, 2013: An earthquake struck near Tokyo Monday afternoon.USGS

No tsunami warning has been issued after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake jolted eastern Japan on Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency says.

The USGS says the earthquake was a magnitude 5.7 and reports it was followed by two smaller earthquakes.

The earthquake shook buildings in Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. There also were no reports of irregularities at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northeastern Japan.

The quake was centered in Tochigi prefecture about 75 miles from Tokyo.

A massive March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami killed nearly 19,000 people and devastated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, triggering meltdowns, spewing radiation and forcing about 160,000 people to flee from their homes.
